Hair Color Blocking 101 – Process + Ideas
What is color blocking for hair?
Recently a hair coloring trend is taking social media by storm. People are calling it by various names like “block hair coloring”, “color blocking hairstyle”, “hair color blocking”, etc. but at a closer look we can easily figure out they all are talking about the same thing. That is a technique that involves coloring hair in a unique way. It’s like color block clothing or makeup, but for your hair.
The color blocking technique uses multiple, distinct color combinations in large sections of the hair. That’s not all. There are different versions you can choose from, like a contrasting version where a section of your hair is colored in a shade that makes it stand out from the rest of your hair. You can also opt for a more subtle look where the stylist chooses a mix of colors that blend well with each other.
Or you can let your stylist be creative and give you a look that is completely unique, eye-catchy, and fun to have. There are many possibilities due to the versatile nature of this technique, which we’ll explore soon.
What is the process of hair blocking?
The color blocking technique commonly involves coloring blocks of hair with different color(s) or bottom layers of a haircut. It can be seen as the opposite of highlighting, which focuses on achieving a more natural look. However, the stylist uses the same foiling techniques that are used for highlighting to achieve color blocking.

So, the process is quite simple. First, you have to decide if you want a more dramatic look or want to go for natural variations. The dramatic version uses contrasting colors that make the blocks stand out. While a natural look involves colors that complement each other and blend.
After having an idea of what you want, the stylist will detangle your hair and separate sections of the hair using hair clips, and prepare the colors to be used. Then the process of coloring will begin, where the stylist will grasp 2 inches sections of hair and lay it on foils and color them with a paintbrush from roots to the ends.
After a section of hair is colored, the foil is folded in half over the hair and folded again from the ends to prevent the color from leaking in other areas. The same coloring process is then repeated for other sections until the desired style is achieved. Later the stylist removes the foil and rinses your hair with water and a quick shampoo. And that’s it. You are ready to rock the new look.
What is the most popular hair color for colorblocking?
The variety of color combinations in color blocking techniques are endless. You can pick your favorite shade of hair colors and ask the hairstyle expert to work with it and they will do it effortlessly. But if you want to narrow down your choices, the most popular color block hairstyle here is half brown and half blonde hair. It creates a contrasting look that makes the person stand out from the herd. Another trending variation involves vivids like half pink and half purple.

We know how exciting it is to get a new hair color but you can’t simply decide to visit a salon without thinking about a few things. Here is some of the common and uncommon tips that we think you should know before stepping in the salon:
- Don’t shampoo right before going to the salon, unless the stylist directs you otherwise. Most shampoos decrease the amount of oily layer that is naturally present on the hair. This layer plays a role in protecting the hair from damage due to chemicals in the hair dye. If you want you can shampoo the hairs 24-48 hours before applying or going for hair color.
- It does take a good amount of time, think hours, as it is a type of art after all. So make sure you ask about the estimated time it will take so you can plan accordingly. And once you step on the seat, just relax and enjoy the process.
- A picture is worth a thousand words. This quote is true even for hair coloring and hairstyles. Bring the picture that inspired you or that has the color you are planning to wear to make sure you and your stylist are on the same page from the start. You can save time on research by going through the color blocking hair ideas in the last section of this article.
- Ask the stylist about the after care needed before you take the plunge because some of the trends may require you to visit the salon every other week for a few times in a row. It is obviously your personal choice in the end but it’s good to know about what type of maintenance is needed if you want to rock a look for months to come.
