“What if men had periods?”
If you’re a girl, you’ve probably wondered that at least once … a month. Well wonder no longer, because a new fake commercial for “manpons” — tampons for men — imagines just what it would look like if Aunt Flo was actually an uncle.
Instead of the typical tampon commercial fare — an impeccably dressed, freakishly beautiful, definitely not bloated woman climbing a mountain while decked out in all white and smiling ear to ear — this spoof features two dudes in a locker room. There’s a manly pat on the back as they share a box of “Manpax Manpons.”
The commercial hones in on the product’s technical aspects, including a “reinforced Kevlar skeleton” and “heated therma-core.” It also passes the NASA wind test, but the infamous blue liquid is noticeably missing from the video.
The best part about this commercial, though, isn’t the humor or social commentary. It’s actually a PSA for WaterAid, a nonprofit that sets up sustainable water and sanitation projects in some of the world’s most impoverished communities.
“If men had periods they would be considered a sign of virility, men would brag about them on Facebook, #imonmyperiod would probably trend regularly on Twitter, and tampon adverts would be fronted by celebrities,” the video’s description reads.
“We’ve launched our ‘If Men Had Periods’ campaign to raise awareness of the 1.25 billion women around the world who do not have access to a toilet during their periods. We are calling on people to sign our ‘Make it Happen’ petition to help get women the dignity they deserve.”
While the petition is specifically geared toward getting the U.K. government’s attention, WaterAid also has a strong U.S. presence. Their current efforts focus on raising aid for victims of the recent earthquakes in Nepal.
